As teachers of singing we’re not responsible merely for a musical product, we are dealing with people. A psychologist would not dream of encouraging a particular side of a patient’s character at the expense of his other strengths and qualities. All free voices have agility, carrying power, dramatic ability, expressive qualities and so on, and thus, encouraging a voice to become a ‘type’ because of a particular strength or tone colour preference, is as irresponsible as it is erroneous.
