A concept more acceptable to the vast majority of teachers down through the years is the distorted belief that control over function can best be achieved by controlling the breath, as to both the quantity to be released and the manner in which it is to be inspired and ‘prepared.’ The result has been that many who could otherwise have sung naturally (in the sense of utilizing a technique which operates in conformity with nature’s laws), with freedom and spontaneity of expression, have been turned into vocal cripples.
